Writing Challenge – What if Hitler was killed by a time traveller?

Adolf Hitler - The Time Traveller's number one target.

Adolf Hitler – The Time Traveller’s number one target.

Pretty much every person who is asked ‘What one thing would you do if you could travel back in time?’ replies with ‘Kill Hitler’.

However, what if someone did manage to kill Hitler, and was then able to travel forward to their original time, with the memories of their previous ‘past’? What would they find? Would we have space travel? Would Winston Churchill have ever become Prime Minister? Would the British Empire have taken longer to fall apart (since the world war greatly contributed to its downfall)? Would atomics have been discovered at a much later date? Would Stalin have spread his communist empire further west? Would we have inconsequential items such as the VW Beetle, the motorway, how about the Fanta drink (invented due to shortages by a Coca-Cola employee in wartime Germany)? Would leaded fuel have been used? Would penicillin have been pushed as hard as it was? Would we have Jerrycans? Would the aerosol can have been invented in the 40’s or later? What What about pressurised cabins? Radio Navigation? When would microwave ovens have come about? When would synthetic rubber and oil be invented? Would computers have moved so far, so quickly? How far would jet technology have advanced? How long would it have taken for Radar to develop? Would the Japanese have still attacked America? Would we even have the Olympic Torch Relay (apparently this was invented by the Nazis for the Berlin Games of 1936). Other things they invented such as remote-controlled drones, assault rifles might be more war-like, but also contributed to other world-changing events.

As you can see, there are any number of questions that are raised by this, and the impact of one man and the evil empire he built had far-reaching consequences. We look forward to hearing from you if you decide to write a short story. If it’s good enough, we might even publish it on our blog!
