Writing Challenge – What if the British won the American Revolution?

<img class=”size-medium wp-image-2244″ src=”http://matthewsylvester.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/rev_collage.png?w=300″ alt=”What if the United States was still a British Colony?” width=”300″ height=”190″ /> What if the United States was still a British Colony? The American Revolution was a pretty pivotal moment in the history of mankind so far. Not only did it see one of the world’s greatest powers losing a war – albeit because they were pretty tied up fighting across Europe as well – but it saw the formation of a country that has never been backward in coming forward.

Any number of events since then might never have happened or turned out a different way. Would there have been the Alamo, the Civil War, the war against Mexico, would there have been different outcomes as to how french-owned territories such as Louisiana came to be part of what we now know as the United States? What would the United States now be called, the Crown Territory of America? New Britain?

The writing challenge is this. Compose a short story covering anything you can think of, or use one of the examples above, how abour writing about a fugitive George Washington trying to evade the British Army as he makes his way towards Spanish-held Alta California in New Spain. Anything that takes your fancy, anything that gets you and your readers thinking. Anything that gets you being creative.
